Helpful Tips to Maintain Your Double-Glazed Glass

If you haven’t got into the habit of cleaning your windows, now’s the time to start. Cleaning your windows has a significant impact on both the look and function of your uPVC glass. Though very little maintenance is needed for your uPVC double glazing, you need to keep them clean to maintain their working parts. Today, we show how you can care for your windows so you can get the most out of your uPVC double glazing.

Start with cleaning the glass

As a rule, uPVC glass should be cleaned four to eight times each year. It’s best to keep away from using chemical-based solutions when cleaning uPVC windows. Instead, you can use traditional glass cleaners and specialist e-cloths designed for cleaning glass to ensure the best outcome.

  • Pick a time when the windows aren’t exposed to direct sunlight—we recommend cleaning on a cloudy day. Why? The sun can often dry your windows too quickly as you wash, leaving streaks on your glass.
  • Prep windows by giving the glass a rub using a damp cloth to remove excess dirt.
  • Apply a non-smear glass cleaner directly to the glass. Work into all corners using a microfibre cloth.
  • Use the drying cloth to polish the glass to perfection.

Don’t forget about the frame

You should also clean your window frames around twice a year. The more you do it, the easier the task will be!

  • Open the windows and use an old paintbrush to loosen dust, dirt, and cobwebs. You can then use a hose on a vacuum to clear them all away.
  • Put washing up liquid in a bowl of warm water and use a soft cloth to wipe down the window frames. Focus on the very edges where the window sits inside the outer frames.
  • For particularly stubborn dirt, you can use a solvent uPVC cleaner, which can be found in hardware shops.

Inspect the locks

We advise you to check the locks of your double-glazed windows and ensure that all of them are in proper working order. It’s wise to unlock and open each window to check that locks are working and that they’re free from dirt and grime. With the windows open, you can spray some oil on the locking strip. Wipe away any excess with a cleaning towel.

Lubricate the hinges

It’s essential to make sure all the other moving parts of your windows are well lubricated too—this includes hinges and handles. Because hinges and handles are exposed metal parts, they need to be lubricated for windows to look their best and for them to function properly.

  • Close the windows before you spray oil on the handles. Spray onto the window key and insert it into the handle lock. Wiggle the key gently and move it in and out of the lock several times.
  • Open the windows and spray oil on the friction hinges.

Prevent mould build-up

Living in a place with high humidity levels can bring unique problems such as condensation. This is more common with old and damaged window seals, which can reduce the lifespan of the window. Regular occurrence of condensation can also encourage mould growth, which can easily damage the frame. To prevent excessive moisture and possible mould growth, make sure to wipe your double-glazed windows with a sponge. You can also open the windows, air out the room, and this will keep your home well-ventilated.

uPVC glass is durable, long-lasting, and requires very minimal maintenance. It will also hardly ever oxidize even, when exposed to wet conditions. However, this doesn’t mean you don’t need to clean your windows. You’ll still need to remove dirt and dust to keep them looking great.
